How to Get Into Student Consulting in Germany

A straightforward guide to joining a student consulting organization at a German university.

Find your options

Most large German universities have at least one student consulting initiative. In Munich alone, there are several. Start by searching for student consulting groups at your university, checking social media, and attending university fairs at the beginning of the semester.

Some organizations focus on specific industries or types of clients. Others, like those working with startups, offer a broader range of projects. Think about what kind of experience you want.

What they look for

Student consulting organizations want people who are curious, reliable, and good at working in teams. You do not need prior consulting experience. Most groups care more about your motivation and willingness to learn than your GPA.

That said, being able to think analytically and communicate clearly helps a lot. If you can demonstrate these traits in your application, you are in a strong position.

The application process

Most organizations have a structured application process that includes a written application, an interview, and sometimes a case study. The case study is usually simpler than what you would see at a traditional consulting firm. It tests your ability to think logically, not your knowledge of business frameworks.

Prepare by practicing how you structure your thoughts. Read up on the organization and understand what they do. Show genuine interest.

Making the most of it

Once you are in, take initiative. Volunteer for projects, attend trainings, and build relationships with other members. The people who get the most out of student consulting are the ones who treat it as more than just a line on their CV.

Also, do not be afraid to take on projects outside your comfort zone. Working on something unfamiliar is where the real learning happens.
