What Is Student Consulting?

Student consulting gives university students the chance to work on real business problems. Here is what it looks like in practice.

The basics

Student consulting is exactly what it sounds like: university students advising companies on real business challenges. These are not classroom simulations. Teams of students work directly with founders, managers, and executives to solve problems ranging from market entry strategies to operational improvements.

Most student consulting happens through student-run organizations at universities. These groups recruit members, train them, and then match teams to client projects. In Germany, there are dozens of these initiatives, and Munich is home to some of the most active ones.

How projects work

A typical project lasts between six and twelve weeks. The client defines a problem or question, and a team of three to five students takes it on. There is usually a kickoff meeting, regular check-ins, and a final presentation with a deliverable.

The deliverable might be a market analysis, a financial model, a go-to-market plan, or a set of strategic recommendations. The quality is often surprisingly high because students bring fresh perspectives and have strong incentives to do well.

Who benefits

Clients get affordable access to motivated, talented people. Students get hands-on experience that is hard to find anywhere else at this stage of their careers. It is a genuine win-win.

For startups especially, student consulting is a low-risk way to get structured strategic input. Many early-stage founders cannot afford traditional consulting firms but still need outside perspectives on their business.

Why it matters for your career

Working on real projects changes how you think about business. You learn to structure problems, handle ambiguity, and communicate with stakeholders. These skills transfer directly to any career path, whether you go into consulting, startups, or corporate roles.

It also builds your network. You meet founders, mentors, and peers who share your drive. Many of these relationships last well beyond university.
